more efficient electrical grids, and advance clean energy research and development (R&D). The new action plan also places a greater emphasis on energy efficiency. Accomplishments to date under the CED include: (1) completing the final phase of the Weyburn-Midale Carbon Dioxide Monitoring and Storage Project, which focuses on best practices for the safe and permanent storage of carbon dioxide (CO 2) used in enhanced oil recovery (EOR); and (2) the North American Carbon Storage Atlas (NACSA), which is the first atlas to map the potential CO 2 storage resource in North America. Action Plan II will include new and ongoing initiatives, such as projects to permanently store CO 2 in geological formations; clarify U.S. and Canadian regulatory authorities for deployment of offshore renewable energy and technologies; and investigate the potential of power storage technologies. The CED was established in 2009 to encourage the development of clean energy technologies to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs) and address potential climate change.
